Ann Pollock: August 29 - October 4, 2025
Ann Pollock studied art history and photography at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Her first camera was gifted by her grandparents when she was 10; her first subjects were her dolls and stuffed animals. Her final project in college used dolls she rented from an antique store. Fast forward to 2020 when she found that she had lots of time on her hands, out came her dolls and The Little Old Dolls were once again her subjects.
"There is something in a doll’s eyes, whether they are simply buttons or fluttering sleep eyes,
that draws me in and urges me to tell their stories, to create their narratives and give them
lives.
A major inspiration for my collage pieces is the discarded forgotten photographs found in
antique and thrift stores. The smiling ladies at the beach in the 1950s, the stone faced
matriarchs of the 1890s - many are nameless and placeless, where others give hints and clues to the identities and personalities of the subjects.
Often, captions give little context, and we’re left to imagine who, why, and where they are. How did these photos end up in a shop, was there no one left to care for them? There is a bittersweetness to these photographs. Each collage is printed on stained rag paper and uses bits of vintage and antique fabric, trim and lace to push the story back to an earlier time. Each doll has a name, a date, and a vague situation - part of a story that you’re left to create." ~Ann Pollock
